Sweet History: Don't Leave Home Without Chocolate ... Ich Liebe Schokolade

If Johann or the Jostys couldn't, can you?

That is … leave home without chocolate? And that's what Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, considered Germany's Shakespeare, was said to have done when touring Switzerland in 1797. He loved chocolate so much that he insisted on having it at all times.

Then there were the Josty brothers. They left their home of Graubünden, Switzerland, emigrated to Berlin, Germany bringing with them their love of chocolate.  By 1792, they had opened a chocolate factory in Berlin and were a hit selling Swiss chocolates. Eberty, the historian, sings praises of their products: "Everything which one got at Josty's was excellent, and the chocolate really first rate."

From the confectioner's shop, they moved on founding the pastry bakery Zuckerbäckerei Johann Josty & Co. in 1796. From this company emerged the Café Josty at least from 1812, first located "An der Stechbahn", then on Schlossplatz Square, and finally after 1880 on Potsdamer Platz. Good enough for politicians, artists and writers, that in the early 20th century it was their place of choice to meet … have a chocolate drink or two, gobble up those pastries and, of course, chocolates. No one simply be away from home without a bite or two.

Decades have passed, but Swiss chocolates are still popular for their quality. I can't get past leaving home without bringing with me at least one or two of  Lindt chocolates.  Especially, the Lindor chocolate truffles. These delicious Lindt chocolates have a shell that enrobes an irresistibly smooth filling. Milky and creamy, but not overly sweet. Once you break the shell, the filling melts and so will you!

I especially like the dark chocolate truffles. Dark or extra dark. But Lindor chocolate truffles also come in white or milk chocolate or a mixed box. Then there's the sensuous flavors of milk peanut butters, mint, raspberry, orange, coffee, hazelnut – chocolate truffles for everyone.

Lindt chocolates are just right to make my meal – or snack – complete. After all, when away from home, I always try to remember to eat a square meal every day. You know, like a box of Lindt chocolates!
