Chocolate Creations: Spooky Treats for Halloween

Halloween Chocolate Ghost Sucker
Happy Halloween!

Think Halloween and the following activities come to mind: spooky decorations and images, carving jack-o'-lanterns, trick-or-treating, costume parties, apple bobbing, playing pranks, telling scary stories and watching horror films.

Spooky decorations and scary costumes. Normal homes become haunted houses on the day with homeowners decorating their porches or home entrances with plastic spiderwebs, paper skeletons, scarecrows, and eery jack-o'-lanterns. The more realistic, the better. In invitation for those brave enough to come knocking on the door.

Trick-or-treating is a Halloween custom. Children , in costumes, go from house to house, asking for treats such as chocolate creations and lolies with the question, "Trick or treat?" If the homeowner does not provide treats of chocolate creations and lollies, then be prepared for mischief to be done.

The practice of trick-or-treating started from medieval times when poor folk would go door to door on All Hallows Day (November 1) receiving food in return for prayers of the dead they do on All Souls' Day (November 2)

Halloween images. The carving of jack-o'-lanterns springs from the medieval custom of carving turnips into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls in purgatory. The turnip was traditionally used in Ireland and Scotland but immigrants to North America used pumpkins which were native to the area. Also being larger, pumpkins were easier to carve than turnips.

Costume Parties. Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after scary figures such as monsters, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. Over time, the costume selection extended to include popular characters from fiction, celebrities, and generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses.

Games and other activities. One common game is apple bobbing, in which apples float in a tub or a large basin of water and the participants must use their teeth to remove an apple from the basin.

The telling of ghost stories and viewing of horror films are common in Halloween parties. Music played around Halloween time usually consists of creepy themes such as ghosts, ghouls or monsters, varying from the comical to the creepy.

Foods. In North America where Halloween comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest, candy apples (or toffee apples), caramel or taffy apples are common treats made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, sometimes followed by rolling them in nuts. They are commonly given to trick-or-treaters.
