It might have been the cook-off from hell – “meaner than a macaroon mountain, crueler than a croquembouche” – but it took me back years to memories from childhood.. Of Hans and Gretel, of The Gingerbread Man, of playing with doll houses. But most of all it brought back memories of the smells of the kitchen.
This is an episode of Masterchef (Australia) from last week, the final elimination before the season finale. The task for the two contestants was to replicate a fully edible fairytale house. Gingerbread walls and roof, pralines coated walls, windows from sugar, decorations of jellies and lollies, all glued together with chocolate.
This challenge allowed both contestants to play child-again in a lollies store. But the final judging came down to a choice between two houses of horrors. One had a good-enough gingerbread house but didn't have many jellies and lollies as decorations. While the second had many varieties of lollies with a not-so-good gingerbread roof.
Yummy! So commendable of them to be able to put together something in four-and-a-half-hours. But it's not something you'll see me doing. I'd go to shop and get something already made. Hmm … what about a Gingerbread House overflowing with sixteen assorted gourmet cookies or a beautiful bright Bird House with 3 dozens of assorted delicious hard lollies and gourmet chocolates?
Will you take up the challenge?
